The Breath Protocol

Build a calmer, more deliberate breathing practice with guided pacing, comfortable walking, a conservative safety lane, and an optional standardized comfort-pause trend.

The goal is not to chase a number. It is a repeatable skill you can use at rest, before sleep, and during easy movement. 5–10 minute practices · 28-day plan · optional re-tests · evidence-aligned
⚕️ Read first — this is education, not medical clearance

These tools do not measure blood oxygen, lung function, fitness, health, or lifespan, and do not diagnose or treat anything. Never hold your breath to strain, never hyperventilate first, and never practise holds in water, while driving, standing, walking, or using machinery. Complete the Readiness Check before any hold-based tool, and stop immediately if you feel dizzy, tingly, panicky, or unusually short of breath.

Which practice should I use?
Steady pace (coherent breathing)Equal inhale and exhale at about 5–6 breaths per minute. The slow-breathing rate most studied for calming the body and raising heart-rate variability. A good daily default and a reset before something stressful.
Cyclic sighingTwo inhales through the nose, then a long, slow exhale. In a 2023 controlled study it produced the biggest quick lift in mood and the largest drop in breathing rate versus other patterns. Best when you want to settle fast in about five minutes.
Longer exhaleA comfortable inhale with a slightly longer exhale. Gentle wind-down; useful before sleep. No breath-holding.
Holds (standard lane only)The BOLT-style pause and seated comfort pauses are optional trend tools, not targets. They stay hidden unless the Readiness Check places you on the standard lane, always end at the first urge, and never involve straining or hyperventilating first.

General education, not medical advice, and individual responses vary. Stop any practice that makes you dizzy, panicky, or short of breath.

How to use this hub
  1. Do the 60-second Readiness & Safety Check first. It picks your lane and decides which tools are safe to show. It is not medical clearance.
  2. Start with no-hold paced breathing. Use the Today card — steady pace, cyclic sighing, or a longer exhale. Short and comfortable beats intense.
  3. Practise most days. Five to ten minutes builds the skill; your streak tracks the habit, not your health.
  4. Holds are optional and standard-lane only. Never hold to strain, never hyperventilate first, and never practise holds in water, while driving, standing, walking, or using machinery.
  5. Re-test lightly on plan days 1, 7, 14, 21, and 28 — a personal trend, never a grade.
