Set up your route
Outdoor Walking Setup
The method needs almost nothing — but a well-chosen route makes the fast blocks easy to hit and safe to run. Here's how to set yours up.
Design the route
You want a stretch where you can walk fast without stopping for 3 minutes at a time.
- Out-and-back or loop of 1.5–2 km covers a full session.
- Prefer flat, even surfaces for your first weeks — pavement, a track, a park path.
- Avoid routes with frequent road crossings that interrupt a fast block.
- Know a bail-out point — a bench or shortcut home — for a low-energy day.
Hills & turns
Once the flat version feels easy, hills are a natural way to raise the fast-block effort without walking faster.
- Use a gentle incline for the fast 3 minutes, walk the downhill as your easy recovery.
- Keep steps short and quick uphill; lean slightly from the ankles, not the waist.
- Slow into turns; loose gravel and wet leaves are the usual trip hazards.
Traffic & safety
- Face oncoming traffic where there's no sidewalk; wear something visible at dawn/dusk.
- Keep one earbud out (or volume low) so the app's cues and your surroundings both come through.
- Carry ID and a phone; tell someone your route if you're going somewhere quiet.
Weather & air quality
- Heat: walk in shade or early/late, shorten bouts, hydrate, and back off intensity — see Hydration.
- Cold: extend the warm-up; layers you can open on the fast blocks.
- Poor air-quality days: if smoke or high pollution is flagged, move indoors or to the treadmill.
Fast-phase technique: pump the arms, quicken the cadence rather than over-striding, eyes up, shoulders relaxed. You should feel powerful, not frantic — short phrases only, never gasping.
