Safety & Medical Gate
Interval walking is safe for most people, but it deliberately raises your effort. This page is where you check the real red flags. It's educational โ it does not diagnose, treat, or clear you medically.
๐ Stop the walk and seek medical care for:
- Chest pain, pressure, or tightness โ especially spreading to arm, neck or jaw
- Fainting or feeling you're about to faint
- Unusual or severe shortness of breath out of proportion to effort
- An irregular, racing, or pounding heartbeat that doesn't settle
- Sudden weakness, facial droop, slurred speech, or confusion (stroke signs โ call emergency services)
โค๏ธ Cardiovascular
If you have known heart disease, a rhythm disorder, uncontrolled high blood pressure, or exertional symptoms, get personalized clearance before the fast blocks. Build intensity gradually and never push through chest symptoms.
๐ฉธ Diabetes & hypoglycemia
- Exercise can lower blood glucose. If you use insulin or glucose-lowering medication that can cause lows, follow your clinician's activity, timing, and monitoring guidance.
- Carry fast-acting carbohydrate. Know your symptoms of a low (shakiness, sweating, confusion) and stop to treat them.
- Check glucose before and after until you know your response; be cautious walking alone until you do.
๐ฆถ Feet & neuropathy
- With diabetes, neuropathy, or reduced foot sensation, inspect your feet before and after walks for blisters or pressure spots you may not feel.
- Wear well-fitted, cushioned shoes and moisture-wicking socks; replace worn shoes.
- Stop for any new foot pain, numbness change, or skin breakdown and have it checked.
๐คธ Balance & falls
If your balance is unsteady, start on flat, even ground, avoid uneven trails and low light, and consider poles. Balance work is especially important for older adults โ pair walking with simple balance drills and strength training at least twice a week.
๐ก๏ธ Heat, illness & air quality
- Heat: shorten bouts, hydrate, seek shade/AC, and stop if lightheaded or you stop sweating.
- Illness/fever: skip intervals while unwell; resume gently.
- Poor air quality: move indoors on smoke/high-pollution days.
๐ฆต Musculoskeletal warning signs
Sharp, worsening, or joint-line pain, swelling, or a joint that gives way isn't "push-through" territory. Back off, use Pain-to-Performance, and get persistent pain assessed. Mild muscle soreness that eases as you warm up is normal.
