The BOLT-Style Control Pause
This is a standardized, comfortable pause after a normal exhale. It is influenced by several factors and is used here only as a personal trend. It is not a maximal breath-hold.
Standardize the test
Use it only on days 1, 7, 14, 21, and 28, at roughly the same time. Sit quietly for five minutes. Avoid testing immediately after exercise, a large meal, alcohol, or a distressing event. Take a normal nasal breath in and a normal breath out. Do not empty your lungs. Pinch your nose and start. Stop at the first clear urge to breathe or first involuntary breathing movement. Your recovery breath should be calm. If you gasp, discard the attempt. Take one honest attempt rather than several strained ones.
Sit quietly, then start at the end of a normal exhale.
